Lean Design for Flow

Introduction

Why do we need to apply lean tools to improve a current situation? Lean needs to start in the engineering phase! A two day class on how to incorporate Lean in process design.

Of course in Lean we believe in continuous improvement and also, environments change, BUT: if we start using lean design principles when developing new value streams for new products, this could avoid waste from the onset. Lean is not just waste elimination, it should be waste prevention!

We also note that there are substantial shortcomings in the traditional way of calculating business cases in order to make trade-off decisions during the design phase. Too often we limit ourselves to calculation direct and indirect cost of the processes, but not the impact on the flow in the value stream.

Value Stream Costing can remedy these shortcomings : by using this cost calculation technique (based on the same input cost data as the traditional ways) we can see which process design is the best from the value stream perspective. It might be better to design/buy multiple smaller pieces of equipment and make these dedicated then to design on ‘monument’ process that will become a shared resource and will impact our flow in the value stream heavily.

What can I do with this training?

By using this cost calculation technique (based on the same input cost data as the traditional ways) we can see which process design is the best from the value stream perspective.
